Michigan State Basketball: 2023-24 season preview for the Spartans
By Joey Loose
Key Reserves
Forward – Jaxon Kohler (Sophomore)
Kohler saw decent time as a reserve in his first collegiate season and has a chance to carve out an even greater role in year two. He averaged just 3.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game and doesn’t really have an outside game, but he’s shown potential in the paint when he’s had those chances. One thing he’ll definitely need to take a step forward as a sophomore is improved defensive play.
Guard – Jeremy Fears Jr. (Freshman)
A 4-star point guard from Joliet, Fears is a major add and part of a very strong recruiting class. While he’s clearly yet to play at the collegiate level, he’s a smart, athletic presence who could develop into quite the leader during his time with the Spartans. We’ll see what kind of run he gets backing up Hoggard, but the Spartans should be excited if he reaches his potential.
Guard – Tre Holloman (Sophomore)
Another solid recruit from last season, Holloman is hoping for more chances as a sophomore after averaging just 1.3 points and 0.9 assists last year. He’s an athletic backcourt presence who could develop into a significant piece in the years to come, though his shooting didn’t exactly spark confidence last season.
Guard – Gehrig Normand (Freshman)
Another backcourt piece from Izzo’s great recruiting class, Normand is a 6’6 guard from Texas who might be the next Spartans’ sharpshooter. He’s got the talent to score from all over the court while also forecasted as a decent rebounder. We’re not sure how many opportunities he’ll get as a true freshman, but his game could develop into something special.
Center – Carson Cooper (Sophomore)
Cooper stands tall at 6’11, but this sophomore hasn’t had many chances to prove himself yet. He’ll be a backup in the frontcourt, giving Sissoko relief at times this season. He averaged just 1.6 points and 0.9 rebounds last year, but he’s a hard worker and a physical presence. We’ll just have to see what kind of sophomore leap he can take as a backup.
Forward – Xavier Booker (Freshman)
The crown jewel among the freshmen, Booker is a 5-star forward from Indianapolis who’s been a rising names in recruiting circles. Not only is he a physical presence in the interior, but he’s shown the versatility and ability to hit outside shots. Building himself up and working on his rebounding ability will be a big necessity to become a star for the Spartans, though he might earn some chances as a reserve in this frontcourt.
Forward – Coen Carr (Freshman)
Carr is a 6’7 small forward from Atlanta who was considered a 4-star prospect and another great grab for Izzo and company. He’s decently strong, has great length, and plays tough on both sides of the ball. While transitioning into the college game, he’ll work on improving his offense, especially outside of the paint, but he’s already a very versatile and skilled weapon for the Spartans.
