Power Conference Player of the Week – Hunter Dickinson (Kansas Jayhawks)

Kansas was already going to be a favorite to win the NCAA title this season but when they were able to go and snag Dickinson from the transfer portal after he decided to enter the portal after a successful career from Michigan. Dickinson is a guy who is going to bring about strong reactions from everyone that watches him play.

If he is on your team you will love him, if your team is playing against him well it’s the opposite. He does things and says things that rub fans and opposing coaches the wrong way, but he is a fantastic basketball player who has a fantastic skill set for Kansas. One of his problems at Michigan was always rumored to be buy in, he appears to be bought in with the Jayhawks this year and they look like an absolute juggernaut out of the gates thanks to their big man.

Typically, I have penalized teams for only playing one game in a week, right or wrong in my mind it meant they just didn’t have the stats needed to make a strong case for a national award. However, Dickinson had an incredible game against Kentucky in the Champions Classic. It was a win over Kentucky and the big man scored 27 points on 8-12 shooting including 1-2 from the three-point line. Dickinson was also 10-11 from the free throw line. That line is already great for 27 points but then when you throw in that he was able to secure 21 rebounds and you have a player that deserves the player of the week in my eyes.

Dickinson may have only played one game but it was a game he dominated and I am giving extra weight for the level of competition. The Jayhawks won that game due to the performance from their big man and that is a sentence that may be typed a lot over the coming months.

It is not everyday when a national title contender can add a national player of the year candidate but that is exactly what happened with Kansas. Dickinson fits what they are trying to do on offense and will get the ball whenever he wants it for coach Bill Self. It was not a 30-point game but it was dominance against another great team in Kentucky. That is what earned the Jayhawk big man the Busting Brackets Power 5 Player of the Week.
