Conference Expansion: Dan Beebe Out As Big 12 Commissioner?
By Blake Lovell
Given everything that has gone on with the Big 12 in recent weeks, there was no doubt that someone was going to be in trouble once all of this mess started to work its’ way out.
And according to CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd, that man will likely be Dan Beebe.
The report states that Beebe will be removed as Big 12 commissioner, and he’ll be replaced by Chuck Neinas, who was the former commissioner of the Big Eight conference.
There’s been a lot surprising developments recent in the conference expansion world. This is not one of them.
Once the Pac 12 made it official that they were not going to pursue Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, Beebe’s reign as commissioner was pretty much over.
It became very clear during this whole process that some of the Big 12 schools were not happy with the way things had went down during all of this. They probably weren’t happy when Nebraska left, and probably weren’t happy when Texas A&M made the push to leave.
So when some of these schools tried to get out and couldn’t, it seemed obvious that they were going to try and force some changes within the Big 12.
Now, there’s still a lot of unanswered questions here.
There’s no guarantee that all the schools in the Big 12 as it stands right now will remain there, even despite not having the Pac 12 as an option at this moment.
Missouri has been rumored to be heading to the SEC, but nothing’s official there yet. If Missouri does go, then the conference has to start searching for replacements pretty quickly. It’s pure speculation as to what conference they would pull new members from.
One thing does seem likely though: they’ll be doing it with a new commissioner.
