Nov. 6 vs. UMBC

Last Year: 25-11 (12-4 America East)
NCAA Tournament: 16 seed, Round of 32
2018-19 Projection: 242nd

Marquette will open the season against UMBC at the brand new Fiserv Forum. The Retrievers will forever be remembered for last season’s historic upset over top-seeded Virginia, but they will not be bringing that same roster to Milwaukee.

Two catalysts of the UVA upset – Jairus Lyles and KJ Maura – graduated this past spring, as did rotation player Jourdan Grant. Those three combined for 39 points, 11.1 assists, 10.1 rebounds, and 4.8 steals per game last year, and were three of UMBC’s five players to average at least 13 minutes. The Retrievers will largely be starting over after their 2018 Cinderella run, with Wisconsin native Joe Sherburne taking over as the lead dog.

Still, this will be a more interesting buy game than most, especially with the added flavor of the new arena. Marquette will play a program with a little bit of juice in the nicest basketball venue in the nation. That’s a pretty good way to kick off the 2018-19 campaign, especially if the Golden Eagles can cruise to a W.
