Indiana Basketball: Bracketology resume breakdown and outlook
Rankings and quadrant records
For starters, I think it is incredibly important to stress that the NCAA Tournament selection committee takes into account a team’s entire body of work. And while the Hoosiers have clearly struggled in 2019, their non-conference endeavors gave them a large margin for error. After this most recent stretch, though, that entire margin has been consumed and IU needs to get back to winning ways in order to make the NCAA Tournament field.
Before diving into the details of IU’s resume at this point in time, here is a quick overview:
- NET Ranking: 47th in the nation
- Resume Metrics: 53rd in KPI, 55th in SOR
- Quality Metrics: 43rd in BPI, 45th in KP, 38th in Sag
- Quadrant 1 Record: 4-8
- Quadrant 2 Record: 2-3
- Quadrant 3 Record: 1-0
- Quadrant 4 Record: 6-0
On the whole, Indiana’s resume does not stand out all that much from the rest of the bubble. Their national rankings are around the mean for bubble teams and their overall record of 13-11 (4-9 Big Ten) is certainly unimpressive. And while they might only have seven wins over Q1/2/3, their top wins are elite.
To put it simply, not many bubble teams can boast three wins over teams that are likely to receive top-4 seeds. Yet, that is exactly what Indiana has with victories over Marquette, Louisville, and Michigan State. These wins will all carry a ton of weight on Selection Sunday should the team find a way to win down the stretch.
