NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 67 NCAA Tournament games from 2019
By Joey Loose
67. #1 Gonzaga 87, #16 Fairleigh Dickinson 49 (Round of 64)
There wasn’t any doubt that Gonzaga would win this game and they had no problem putting Fairleigh Dickinson away early. Up double digits almost immediately, the Bulldogs raced to a 36-point lead at the half and did more than enough to put away the game in the second half. Rui Hachimura has 21 points while Killian Tillie added 17 off the bench. They held the Knights to just 30% shooting and forced 17 turnovers from the overmatched NEC champions. There simply wasn’t any chance that Gonzaga was going to suffer an upset at the hands of a 16 seed.
66. #2 Kentucky 79, #15 Abilene Christian 44 (Round of 64)
The Wildcats of Abilene Christian made the NCAA Tournament for the first time, but any dreams of a 15 over 2 upset were crushed pretty early. Kentucky shot the ball well while Abilene Christian struggled on the national stage. Kentucky’s lead was 26 at the half and only increased after the break. Kentucky grabbed more than twice as many rebounds and shot greater than 50% from the field. Keldon Johnson’s 25 points led the way while Reid Travis put up 18 points and 9 rebounds for the victorious Wildcats. This game was never in doubt; Abilene Christian was simply overwhelmed by a very potent lineup from beginning to end.
65. #4 Kansas 87, #13 Northeastern 53 (Round of 64)
Early on, this looked like a potential upset could be brewing, as Kansas led just 20-19 after twelve minutes, but the Huskies fell back as Kansas caught fire. The Jayhawks built a 12-point halftime advantage and pulled away in the second half. Kansas outrebounded by Northeastern by 18 and also shot 56% from the field. Dedric Lawson put up 25 points and 11 rebounds while Devon Dotson scored 18 points. The Huskies simply had no answers as the Jayhawks pulled away in the middle of the game, watching a potentially close game completely vanish.
64. #3 Houston 84, #14 Georgia State 55 (Round of 64)
Georgia State made the Tournament for the second straight year, but the Panthers were no match for a talented Houston squad. The Cougars led from start to finish, holding a 9-point halftime lead before exploding in the second half. Houston dominated the boards, winning the rebounding battle 51 to 27 and made more than half of their shots. Corey Davis Jr. led the way with 26 points while Georgia State got 18 points from star D’Marcus Simonds. This was a great start to the Tournament for Houston after last year’s devastating buzzer beater loss to Michigan.
