Gil Williamson joins Virginia Tech

Gil Williamson will join Virginia Tech as a walk-on for the 2020-21 season. Williamson hit a growth spurt since entering the high school, growing seven total inches and now stands at 6-8. The Richmond (VA) native played at St. Christopher’s High School, where he averaged around 19 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks.

Williamson is the second player this past week to coach Mike Young’s 2020-21 squad as Kansas State grad transfer Carter Diara verbally committed to the Hokies on March 31. Virginia Tech now has five players in its current recruiting class and does not currently have any scholarships available. Four-star guards Joe Bamisile and Darius Maddux, as well as three-star forward David N’Guessan, are the other members of the Hokies 2020 class.

A pair of Hokies transfer from Virginia Tech

Isaiah Wilkins and Brendan Palmer announced that they would be transferring from Virginia Tech on March 31. Wilkins has played a crucial role off the bench for the Hokies the past two seasons though the 6-3 sophomore guard struggled this past season, averaging 4.3 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 34% from the field and 28.4% from beyond the arc. He scored in double-figures in four of his 32 appearances and averaged just 0.95 points per shot. Meanwhile, Palmer initially walked on to the Hokies and appeared in four games in each of his two years with the team.

Wilkins and Palmer become the third Hokie to transfer as Landers Nolley II entered the NCAA transfer portal in mid-March.

Ian Dubose transfers to Wake Forest

Ian Dubose transferred to Wake Forest from Houston Baptist on March 30.

“Wake Forest is close to home, and it checks all the boxes,” the Durham (NC) native told 247Sports. “It’s a great academic school and a high-athletic school. It’s just a good fit for me.”

Dubose had a break-out season this past year, averaging 19 points along with 7.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, and 1.6 trifectas while shooting 43.9% from the field and 32.6% from beyond the arc. The All-Southland Conference first-team selection produced nine double-doubles and scored in double-figures in 28 of 29 contests. He topped the 20-point plateau 12 times, which included tossing in a career-high 44 points in a HBU 111-107 overtime victory over Central Arkansas on Jan 2.  Dubose has scored 1,414 and has knocked down 36.7% of his 3-pointers during his college career.

This is a good pickup for coach Danny Manning as Dubose, who is eligible immediately as a grad transfer, fills a huge void at guard. Brandon Childress, Andrien White, and Torry White graduated while Sharone Wright Jr. and Michael Wynn have departed the program. That leaves the Deacs with just Dubose and Jahcobi Neath, who averaged 5.3 points and 2.2 assists last year as a freshman, as the only experienced backcourt players. Wake has signed three-star point guard Marcus Watson Jr., and two-star combo guard Quadry Adams as part of their 2020 recruiting class.
