NCAA Basketball: Analyzing the 7 options for 2022 five-star PG Bryce Griggs
Baylor Bears
Losing all-time program stars Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell will be nearly impossible to simply recover from but Baylor did manage to land 15 ppg scorer James Akinjo from Arizona and D-II star Dale Bonner. And former four-star recruit LJ Cryer is set to have a bigger role next season as a sophomore.
Still, Griggs is the kind of talent and playmaker that can get the Bears right back into national title contention. Assuming Akinjo departs, he provides the team with a clear lead guard in case neither Cryer and Bonner are starting-caliber in the Big 12. And with the proven development of the coaching staff led by Scott Drew, this option provides nothing but positives for the recruit.
Houston Cougars
With both DeJon Jarreau and Quentin Grimes now gone, the Cougars will be looking to reload in the backcourt with a quality lead point guard. They still have some good scorers sticking around in Tramon Mark, Marcus Sasser, incoming four-star guard Emanuel Sharp, and Texas Tech transfer Kyler Edwards. But unless one of them breaks out as a true point, it’ll have to be a collective effort to distribute the ball.
Griggs could come in and give clear order to the offense as the starting point guard and seeing what head coach Kelvin Sampson did with Grimes after struggling at Kansas is a great development selling point. The only issue with picking the Cougars is that they play in the American Athletic Conference, not as good or noticeable as the Big 12 or SEC. But coming off a season of making the Final Four, this program has shown that you can still win big here.
