Jaylan Gainey, 6’9 Forward, Florida State Seminoles

Jaylan Gainey is the latest Ivy League star to make the leap to Power 5 basketball by signing with the Florida State Seminoles out of the transfer portal. He’s a wiry 6-foot-9 big man that’s made waves around the rim in his time with the Brown Bears.

Gainey should certainly garner some attention on both sides of the ball in 2022-23 given his resume. His ability to block shots and utilize his length are certainly two things that the Seminoles could use greatly after the season they had going 10-10 in ACC play and 17-14 on the season. As a two-time Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, Gainey’s presence should change the defensive trajectory for the Seminoles this upcoming season.

Florida State ranked 255th this past season in points allowed per game (71.9) and 266th in defensive rating (104.1) after finishing 141st and 109th respectively in 2020-21. While they aren’t exactly Top 25 rankings, it means something when that same team also went 11-4 in ACC play and made it to a Sweet 16.

Gainey produced 9.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 2.1 bpg while shooting 70.3 percent from the field in 2021-22. As a surefire bucket in the paint and a strong presence around the rim defensively, his impact should be felt greatly in the Seminoles’ frontcourt.
