2. Owen Freeman (Iowa)

There’s been no shortage of talent at Iowa in recent years and Freeman looks like the latest in that successful line. A forward from the Quad Cities, he just finished his freshman season with the Hawkeyes and showed plenty of potential. This wasn’t exactly the ideal season for the team at Iowa, but Freeman at least gave them reason for excitement in years to come.

That brilliant season saw him average 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while making nearly 63% of his 2-point field goal attempts. The Hawkeyes scratched out a 6th place finish in the Big Ten, though they would miss the NCAA Tournament. However, Freeman became the team’s leading rebounder and actually took home Big Ten Rookie of the Year honors for his efforts. In addition to his great scoring percentage, Freeman was also among the league’s top rebounders and shot blockers.

Freeman had a few decent efforts in nonconference play, but claimed a starting role for the Hawkeyes by the middle of December. He had 22 points and 10 rebounds in a nice January win over Nebraska and later dropped 17 points and 14 rebounds against Wisconsin. A 20-point, 12-rebound, 6-assist effort keyed a win over Wisconsin, while he’d score in double figures in both of Iowa’s NIT games to finish off the campaign.
